When it comes to kayak cradles you have a few choices.
What type of kayak are you transporting? How many kayaks do you need to get on the carrier?
- Sea kayak: almost any of the available cradles will do if you have a single kayak. Top choices would be horizontal Thule Kayak Carrier 874 and the cheaper foam . If you have up to two kayaks then the two previous cradles will work side by side on your roof, with sufficiently wide roof rack bars. You can also add the Thule Kayak Stacker 520-1 so that you can stack the kayaks side by side, this is great if you're more pressed for roof space.
- White water kayak: generaly for one or two white water kayaks we'd recommend you don't bother at all and just tie the boats directly onto the roof bars. If there's more of a group of you heading out then a stacker is the best way to go. If you'd simply prefer to keep your boats off the bars themselves ( which can put black marks on kayaks ) then the is a compact and easy to use option.
- Multisport kayak: it's worth taking a bit more care of a carbon-kevlar speed machine. With a bit of care the Thule Kayak Stacker 520-1 wil let you carry two boats at once, but we'd recommend the Thule Kayak Carrier 874 for carrying one or two kayaks - they shape to the hull well and will help you avoid cracking the shell when you tie down your kayaks.
