The RFD Guardian lifejacket is what we recommend for all kayaking children aged 10 and under.
Many parents ask us "What is the difference between a "Life Jacket" and a buoyancy aid?" The difference between a life jacket and a buoyancy aid is that the life jacket is designed with more overall floatation, especially in the front so it can roll an unconscious swimmer face up, and, secondly they have a head support flap that will hold an unconscious swimmer's head above water. Buoyancy aids have less floatation and are built for maximum flexibility and mobility - perfect for watersports. Life jackets are recommended for children, as sometimes kids can be rowdy and are more likely to be knocked out by their accidents than adults.
The Guardian, an inshore MSA compliant life jacket, is made of multi-layered buoyancy foam that contours for exceptional body fit when the clips are secured. They are brightly coloured for all-weather visibility.
Adult sizes have a fold up waist flap for comfort in kayaks with seat backs, children's models are short enough to not need this feature.
Adult exceeds 71 Newtons, children's sizes are variable in their buoyancy levels to match child weights as noted below.
Sizes:
- CXS (Child Xtra Small with crutch strap) for children 10 - 15 kgs (pictured in the main photo spot in the upper left)
- CS (Child Small with crutch strap and whistle) for children 12 - 25 kgs (photo lower left)
- CM (Child Medium with whistle) for children 22 - 40 kg (photo lower right)
- Adult sizes for everyone over 40kgs: XS-M, L, XL, XXL
Please do NOT buy a life jacket for your child to 'grow into'. Get the right size or they may never have the chance to grow into it. Jackets and bouyancy aids that are too large can and do float away over the child's head at exactly the time they are needed. The few dollars saved aren't worth your child's life.
