The Wicked Wings Ell is a good marathon distance carbon wing paddle, and also a good first blade that will allow you to paddle a range of boats and conditions comfortably. The Ell is a progressive and forgiving blade based on the Lettman medium and very similar to, but significantly stiffer than, the Carlisle/Canoesports Speedwing s2000.
Wicked Wings are South African made river running blades, designed for events like the Dusi Canoe Marathon and the Fish River Canoe Marathon. Available in tipped and untipped versions. Tipped blades retain their tip shape better over repeated uses in rocky conditions. Untipped blades withstand larger impacts with rocks better - this makes them far less likely to delaminate than a metal tipped blade, instead they will gradually wear down in rocky conditions.
The manufacturer of Wicked Wings says:
"Our wing paddles have a fibre to resin ratio of almost 1:1. We only use top core materials, only build with epoxy resin, heat cure, then post cure. We have a complex lay up with up to 12 layers of carbon cloth in certain areas tapering down to give action to the blade as well as to prevent sudden changes in strength / flex to avoid fatigue in the materials after repeated use. My main hate in wing paddles is clear gel coat finish - it's brittle and serves no structural purpose - instead we use an extra layer of glass in place of gel coat."
Which explains why their carbon blades are strong, durable, light and aren't as shiny as others.
