The Ocean Kayak Mysto is the best tracking (goes in a straight line) short kayak I've paddled and tested yet.
With its high seat (dry ride), angled sides (even a three year old can happily reach the water to paddle it despite its width which makes it so stable), hard handles (almost anyone can car top this light kayak), and included accessories (seat, paddle holder, and storage well with bungy straps) and optional internal hatch, the Mysto became one of our top selling kayaks the moment it was released and continues this high standing to this day.
A word from the designer:
“The Mysto is a great all-rounder for the family who wants a really fun boat,” said Ocean Kayak and Necky kayak designer Spike Gladwin. “The styling is a departure from the traditional shape of sit-on-top– and it’s something very different for Ocean Kayak.”
The Mysto has a sleek hull shape and the craft remains extremely stable and efficient to paddle whatever your size or weight. Both adults and children can enjoy the Mysto.
“Dads can use it, and one of the kids can jump on with him,” commented Spike.
Included in the design are some clever new features. In addition to the built-in skeg, there are two small fins at the back of the boat to give additional tracking.
“The bottom of the hull is shaped partly like a surf board, so at the beach even beginners will be able to surf waves” said Spike.
The main skeg also has a sacrificial plastic pad to protect the hull if the boat is dragged. When the pad is worn down it can simply be replaced.
Other features include self-draining scuppers, moulded-in foot wells and moulded-in handles at the front and the sides. The Mysto is easy to carry and easy to climb back on board if you’ve been for a swim. There are also moulded-in tank wells at the front and back of the boat for storage and a moulded-in backrest, and included clip in comfort seat, or you can use the integral anchor points to fit the backrest of your choice (trade-ins available at the time of purchase for those who want to upgrade their seat).
The most distinctive feature about the Mysto is how different it feels to paddle it from other short sit-on-top kayaks. When sitting on the Mysto you'll feel very high and dry while paddling this very stable kayak. The unique shape of the hull makes the Mysto track considerably better than other kayaks of its length, making it easy to paddle even for those who have never been in a kayak before.
If you intend to paddle short distances on mostly flat water or slow rivers, then this is the kayak for you.
