The Contour 490 tandem kayak is a two person kayak that has excellent stability, even in choppy disorganized water, has plenty of gear storage for those who want to paddle the Abel Tasman or the sounds for a week or two, and is very fast with two people paddling. Anyone can hop in this kayak and take off - making it a good kayak for those with baches who have guests over frequently who may never have kayaked before, and for families with kids - kids get the seat up front with the good views!
Starting from the front of the kayak:
The moulded-in carry handles are extremely durable and maintenance free. The best part about these handles is that when two people are carrying the kayak, stand on opposite sides - one on the left and one on the right. The handles are perfectly balanced so that the kayak rides flat, and the weight seems even less than it is at 35kg as you don't have to hold your hands out away from your body while carrying it. Since this part of the kayak rides well out of the water while you are paddling, this feature has no effect on the handling of the kayak in the water. There is a bar moulded in the very tip of the kayak for those who also want to have a "T" handle for wavy beach landings, and for those who want to string a grab line around the outside of the kayak.
The front hatch is sealed with a neoprene hatch cover that is protected by a plastic hatch cover. This opening is plenty big enough to fit food bags and dry bags with cooking gear through. This is the dryest compartment of the kayak, and a good place for those items that don't necessarily need a dry bag and can handle any dampness that may occur from condensation. There is a tie strap on the hatch cover that can be tied to the front bungees to be sure it doesn't go for a wander when at camp or packing up to leave after a good day's paddle.
Bungees across the deck are in a good location to hold down a waterproofed map. The attachment points for these bungees are moulded into the kayak itself and thus are very durable, protecting the bungee as well as the kayak.
The cockpits are very roomy making them easy to get into and out of again. The seats themselves are made to be comfortable sitting in them for an entire day - and I can vouch through personal experience that they are still comfortable after many long days of paddling in them in a row. There are foot pegs to brace against in both cockpits - the back cockpit's pedals have flaps to control the rudder.
Between the cockpits is another bungee cord for a dry bag with lunch or a camera, etc. The toggles (red and green balls seen in the photo of the kayak) are to raise and lower the rudder as required/desired.
The back hatch and storage area is much larger than the front one, with an opening big enough to handle even the largest of sleeping bags and dry bags.
The rudder's lines are internally housed to be sure they are protected from catching on the world at large, and continue to work well over many years.
