The Necky Chatham 17 is for more advanced sea kayakers who want a fast, responsive, easy-to-roll sea kayak with a skeg, which avoids the deck windage of a rudder, provides considerably more tracking force than a standard rudder, and stays well in the water in a following swell. The seventeen has less-pronounced rocker than its 16-foot sibling, giving the 17 stronger tracking and greater hull speed. It sits comfortably on edge and responds quickly to a deliberate paddle stroke. Adjustable outfitting offers maximum comfort while still providing positive fit for aggressive edging and rolls.
The Necky retractable skeg allows a paddler to adjust the trim of the kayak, balancing any extra drag against the extra tracking in windy conditions with a fine tuned adjustment system. A skeg can help reduce fatigue and make a significant difference in your boat's tracking ability.
Necky skegs incorporate "Necky Wire," a highly durable, kink-resistant wire common to the medical industry. It is unaffected by salt water and does not stiffen or kink over time. In testing, we've never experienced a failure, even when the skeg was repeatedly slammed against logs or hard rocks jammed inside the skeg box.

Polymer material - why is it used for sea kayaks?
Superlinear polyethylene is an excellent material to build kayaks with for one fundamental reason: bomb-proof durability. Necky's polymer sea kayaks are second to none in design, performance and strength.
This starts with material choices. As a pioneer in the art of rotomolding sea kayaks, Necky has vast experience in drawing on the inherent qualities of polyethylene. Their careful application of technology creates drier, stronger boats that perform year after year under the most grueling conditions. And we don't rest until we create the best performance platform for each model's intended use, resulting in beautifully efficient kayaks of startling durability at a highly affordable price.
