Multisport Kayaks

Whether you're racing for the front or just getting to the finish line the right choice of multisport kayak can make or break your race. Get something too fast with too little stability for your skills and conditioning and it can be a long, slow and cold swim down river. Get something too slow and you'll have to watch the opposition come cruising past you in their sleeker, more efficient kayaks.

The first choice to make is probably whether you need a multisport kayak designed to compete or to complete. Are you aiming to be at the top of the rankings, to improve a previous race time or do you just want to reach the end and know that you did it?

Multisport kayaks come in a full range of designs to suit the novice to the advanced, and both those looking to complete and compete.

At the more stable end of the multisport range you have the Sisson Centrix, Barracuda Saracen and the Barracuda Saracen-X. These kayaks will let you get out on the water with little or no experience, while providing a significant step up from a stable sea kayak option such as the Barracuda Beachcomber Ultralight and will take you up to lower intermediate speeds.

In the intermediate range are the Barracuda Saracen Ultra and the Sisson Kayaks Nucleus range - Nucleus 60, Nucleus 80 and Nucleus 100. These kayaks are suitable for people looking to put in some good times down river but still looking for a good level of stability. Often these kayaks are a good choice if you are looking to step up your multisport kayaking, or have a good sense of balance and core skills but not neccessarily the time to step up to the elite level of kayak.

The fastest of the multisport kayaks is the Sisson Kayaks Evolution Omega, offering a great stability to speed ratio for the elite paddler.

Other factors you may want to consider when choosing a multisport kayak:

  • Longevity - we only sell composite kayaks that use a final layer of gelcoat over the composite materials. There are good reasons for this - check these google results for further information, basicaly kevlar loses it's strength very rapidly when exposed to UV. We don't sell paddles or kayaks that have exposed kevlar.
  • Solid construction techniques - Sisson kayaks have long had a name for the best multiport construction techniques in New Zealand, their kayaks are stiffer and tougher than anyone else's but without sacrificing weight considerations. Barracuda have a similar level of respect for their sea kayaks, and bring long term knowledge of composite construction to the multisport world.
