The Rakaia gorge is the perfect river on which to learn and practice your grade II multisport kayaking skills. The water is bouncy with plenty of rapids and bluffs to learn or improve your paddling skills, and has plenty of water to cushion your kayak along the way. Making a wrong turn or swimming rarely means contact with rocks for you or your kayak. The length of the trip is perfect - two to three hours is long enough to have a good paddling session and short enough to do as a leisurely day trip.
Because the water is truly grade II, unlike the lower Waimak, kayaking the Rakaia provides proper training for the Waimak gorge without the long 5-6 hours of paddling in a full gorge trip. Access is easy, reducing the cost of this trip because it is feasible for everyone to meet at the river and use a second car for retreive - no extra transport or dedicated driver required. Kayaking the Rakaia is ideal preparation for the Coast to Coast, the water is a little bigger, the eddies a little tougher but ultimately it's more forgiving of mistakes.
The scenery on this river is spectacular, with turquoise blue glacial melt waters and high cliffs with multicoloured rocks. If you have some paddling experience, and you'd like to kayak on a beautiful braided river away from traffic and tourists (except for the occasional jet boat), the Rakaia trip is a great choice.
While we have a minimum of two people for this trip, finding at least a second person is often easy, as we use this section in our grade II courses and can combine a course Meet at the PaddlerZone shop at 8:30am or meet at the takeout at 10:00am and return to Christchurch around 4pm. Carpooling can be arranged as long as there are two cars in total for retrieve. Once booked, you'll receive a call a week prior to your trip to chat with your guide/instructor and ask any questions you may have about your particular trip.
All of our moving water kayak instructors are qualified to a minimum NZOIA Kayak 1. All of our Sea Kayak instructors hold SKOANZ certification.
Learn with someone that knows how to paddle, how to teach, and how to make a quick and effective rescue should something happen.
In the event that you need to change or cancel your trip or course we require a minimum of 48 hours notice to reschedule or refund. A $40 administration fee applies to any cancellations within 14 days of your course or trip start date.
