Course in brief

  • Who is this course for?
    • You have completed your Grade 2 Certificate and now you’re looking to improve your technical skills, to gain more control over your multisport kayak and to go faster.
  • What will I learn on this course?
    • Taking your existing long boat skills we will utilize shorter white water kayaks to spend more time focused on boat control, improving your confidence and stability on moving water. Stop taking the chicken lines, get into the fast water, learn to love rapids and river features and beat the competition down river.
  • How long is this course?
    • It can be completed over two  consecutive days or taken over two separate days.
  • Who will teach me?
    • You will be taught by NZOIA qualified instructors – independently assessed and skilled in both teaching and rescuing.
  • What can I do after this course?
    • You’ll be more confident on the river, be a greater asset to your training partners, you'll beat them in races, be safer on the river and you can paddle a wider range of rivers and kayaks.
    • Take the follow on Faster Lines course to take your confidence and add smooth efficiency, passing skills and line choices to destroy the opposition.

This course consists of

  • an evening pool session
  • a skills theory session
  • two full river days.

Day 1 includes a theoretical seminar, flat water, and moving water sessions.

Day 2 is spent on the Hurunui River, which is renowned for its fun rapids that are great for learning on. It offers a greater density of features and slightly larger eddy lines and rapids than the Waimak and the Rakaia. This gives good opportunities for learning and overcoming any lingering fear of moving water.

The course focuses of the following aspects of kayaking:

Improved eddy turns and ferry glides

  • Learn to control a boat without the aid of a rudder
  • Learn how to edge and why this is so important
  • Learn about ‘blocking the turn’ and ‘spin momentum’

Confidence on and in white-water

  • Spend more time on grade 2 or higher rapids (depending on the group's skill level)
  • Spend more time navigating hazards
  • Learn to really relax upside down in a kayak
  • Make rapids one of the parts you look forward to

Better understanding of rapids and river features

  • Spend time scouting rapids and selecting lines
  • Experience the effects of river features and learn how to benefit from them instead of avoiding them

Controlled river running and safe group management

  • Be a valuable & contributing member of a group
  • Safe practices on river journeys
  • River signals and communication
  • Rescue techniques to help yourself and other paddlers in trouble
  • The gear you should carry
  • How to safely and effectively assist a swimmer

Weather and flow reading

  • Basic weather data interpretation
  • How different weather patterns affect river flows
  • How to make informed decisions

Transport & Logistics

You will need to have the ability to transport yourself and kayak to the various locations in the Canterbury area. Car-pooling with other clients is recommended as a more economical, environmental and social option. There is the option of staying overnight at the Hurunui to cut down on driving and to allow us to get more paddling done. There is a wonderful riverside campsite  where we can stay in tents if you choose to.

All of our moving water kayak instructors are qualified to a minimum NZOIA Kayak 1. All of our Sea Kayak instructors hold SKOANZ certification.

Learn with someone that knows how to paddle, how to teach, and how to make a quick and effective rescue should something happen.
